When was the initiative of the transformation started?

Kasih Pengharapan Foundation comes with the main reason to provide a school that was born from the desire and the guidance of God to touch and bring people to know the love of God. Kasih Pengharapan Foundation presented to overshadow the free school with the vision of transformation for underprivileged people, especially in the area west of Surabaya. The school’s name is Pelita Permai School with the level of education; Playgroup (ages 4-5 years old), Kindergarten A (ages 5-6 years old), Kindergarten B (ages 6-7 years old), and Primary school grade 1-6 (7 – 12 years old).

Pelita Permai School started in 2008, 10 years ago with the first student number as many as 13 children (kindergarten level). This school started unintentionally (for humans so) when the Mrs. Liana Christanty (leader and founder of the Kasih Pengharapan Foundation) having a morning walk with her two children to look for butterflies. While they are walking they meet 3 children, who eventually known one of them named Wawan. He didn’t know his age, and he could not read and write. That morning, Wawan and his friends invited to Mrs. Liana’s house to eat breakfast together and also play around with her two children. When Wawan and his friends were eating, he put aside eggs and sausage in fried rice he eats. In amazement Mrs. Liana asked him why he put aside eggs and sausage? he said that the sausage and eggs will be given to his younger brother at home, who had never eaten a sausage like this. Mrs. Liana surprised also touched, in the big city like Surabaya there are children like Wawan who have never eaten eggs and sausage. Furthermore, Mrs. Liana told to Wawan that she will come next week again to make him, his friends, and also his brother and sister fried rice like that morning. Saturday afternoon as promised Mrs. Liana, she came to bring food and kids really have been waiting. Since that time regularly every Saturday afternoon Mrs. Liana brought the children food and milk for they can enjoy together. While sharing food, children also get education. Because of the many children who are illiterate, Mrs. Liana finally started opening tutoring classes for the introduction of reading and writing.

But in reality it is not easy to make them love and understand the usefulness of reading and writing. They are reluctant to come and if they were asked they answer “wait until we finish “ngamen” and got some money”. Seeing this reality Mrs. Liana ventured to open a kindergarten, because she thought it is easier to start from an early age children than start of the children who had been eleven years old and above. The beginning of August 2008, Pelita Permai Kindergarten has began, The kindergarten progressing well and growing constantly until now and this year (2018) serves 250 students with grade levels starting from Playgroup, Kindergarten and Primary School. Most of our students come from slums Tubanan, extends to areas Gadel and Sambisari in West Surabaya. And their parents to work as scavengers, drivers, security guards, newspaper sellers, street musicians, construction workers, and housekeeper.

Now the biggest problem faced in the region is the lack of educational opportunities that lead to high rates of poverty lifestyles and unhealthy behaviors due to a lack of insight and knowledge, thus giving birth to a mindset that tends to encourage a sense of despair that worsen their condition and form children “trouble maker”, negative thinking patterns and behavior that tends to anarchy in the cultural life of poverty that always gives a sense of despair, aggressive and mindset wrong.

Kasih Pengharapan Foundation, with Pelita Permai School shaded try to participate to handle poverty in this area. Pelita Permai School attend to provide and organize formal education from the age of 4-12 years for them. Education that we have designed we hope able to guarantee equal educational opportunities, improve the quality and relevancy and efficiency of teaching and learning. We achieve equal opportunities in compulsory education starts from the level of playgroups, kindergartens to primary schools.

Improving the quality of education is directed to improving the quality of students through careful though, if the thought, though the taste, and exercise in order to have a competitive edge in the face of global challenges. Increasing relevance is intended to produce graduates with character and have extensive knowledge. Increased efficiency of education management is done through the implementation of school-based management and reform of education management in a planned, purposeful, and sustainable. So that the beginning of Pelita Permai School shaded by Kasih Pengharapan Foundation. Humanly feels impossible but apparently God has a wonderful plan for children and scavengers in this West Surabaya areas.

Activities that had been carried out by Kasih Pengharapan Foundation include:
Education Division

1. Provide preschool education (Playgroup and Kindergarten) and Primary School following the Indonesian national education curriculum standards.
2. Conduct training in health, hygiene and provide basic self-care skills from an early age through teaching, coaching and social life at school.
3. Regularly monitor their health and provide nutrition in the form of healthy food (eating together), vitamins and milk each week.
4. The formation of character and self-development. Character building activities and self-development is facilitated and guided by counselors, teachers and other educators. Character building activities conducted through counseling services with regard to issues of self and social life. Self-development activities conducted through extra curricular activities (dance, angklung, music and vocal group).
5. To provide guidance to parents in Parent’s Meeting.

Empowerment Division

1. Job training and job creation through Home Industry by empowering parents who want to increase the income and skill.
2. The free tutoring for local residents started primary school level to high school.
3. Kids and teenagers community mentoring.
4. Parents community mentoring (fellowship of fathers and mothers are scheduled once a month).
5. The community outreach in the form of Rumah Anak, Pelita FC Surabaya, scholarships, free medical treatment, medical assistance, distribution of food, street children outreach, talent development (football, band, vocal group), community outreach disadvantaged in other areas around West Surabaya to visit and help to support the daily needs day.
